British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."
During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
