The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
