One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in seasons, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
